ZOOM IN: Color Compositions by Ana-Maria Pandey
VENUE: The Substation
DATES: 28th October to 1st November 2013
Ana-Maria Pandey brings us her first solo exhibition titled ZOOM IN: Color Compositions of abstract paintings at The Substation from 28th October to 1st November 2013. The curated collection presents 20 abstract color compositions based on the magnified view of nature.
“Painting is a need”, explains Ana-Maria of her passion and dedication to her medium. While her paintings express her life and longings they are an extension of her self and her being. Ana-Maria grew up in communist Romania in an artistic family surrounded by nature. Art in Romania at the time was a tool for communist propaganda and freedom of thought and expression were curtailed. One of her earliest teachers in Romania Professor Constantinescu encouraged her to break free of prevailing art practices and express in an abstract way her feelings and sensations like “the sound of broken glass or the taste of a lemon”. Unfortunately for her she could not pursue a career in art and her circumstances forced her into a structured life of finance and economics. A scholarship program lead her to Japan where she ended up living for well over a decade working for Lehman Brothers Tokyo, last occupation as a project manager.
Although she was preoccupied with the world of numbers for years she never failed to absorb the art all around her in Japan and therefore not surprisingly now, as a full time artist, she draws her inspirations from nature. Recently she has been studying Chinese Calligraphy in Singapore with Nai Swee Leng and the influences of Chinese brush strokes are also present in her current body of work.
Working in a square and rectangular format with acrylics and polymers, Ana- Maria enjoys pushing the traditional painting styles into an abstract color field. She sometimes layers the surface of the canvas with marks that echo the curvilinear forms of calligraphic letters and words. These intricate lines come together to create color filled compositions that can be read in multiple ways – as landscapes or atmospheric phenomena. Interestingly the color and forms in her paintings change based on the external light source affecting and altering the balance and harmony of her works.
Ana-Maria taps into her emotions and memories of the life she left behind in Romania and the new life she discovered in Japan and Singapore. She sums up her vision saying “Art makes the imagination travel and every painting is a new trip for me”.
